dc.description.abstractThe interest to provide quality of service (QoS) in the Internet has led to a plethora of research work that aims to provide QoS guarantee for many emerging applications in the Internet paradigm. As the Internet is based on the packet switching technology, the research work includes a wide range of topics, such as packet scheduling, admission control, flow and packet classifications, traffic policing, buffer management, etc. The accumulation and development of the research work in this area has led to two QoS architectures: Integrated Service (IntServ) and Differentiated Service (DiffServ). Integrated Service aims to provide per flow deterministic QoS guarantee but suffers from the issue of scalability. Differentiated service is proposed to address this issue by means of flow aggregation and service is provided by means of a per-aggregate per-hop behavior. However, only coarse QoS and service differentiation is provided in Differentiated Service.en
