The legacy IEEE 802.11 WLAN standard does not provide quality of service (QoS) to support multimedia applications such as voice and video services. The 802.11 standard is originally designed to support only data network services. However, as the demand of multimedia applications such as wireless voice over IP (VoIP) and video conferencing grows, it becomes essential to support these services in the WLAN too. Therefore, a new task group known as Task Group E or TGe was formed and assigned the task to develop the new standard, 802.lie which can provide QoS in the WLAN.en_US
