Abstract: Being a serious source of attenuation for microwave communication, rain affects the availability of satellite to ground links very much. Communication systems operating at high frequencies experience severe signal attenuation due to rain, especially in tropical regions like Singapore. Therefore, it is necessary to study and examine the characteristics of rainfall attenuation. A good knowledge of long term variability of rainfall and characteristics of rainfall rate is very useful for the prediction of rain attenuation. Based on these considerations, studies have been done in this project to characterize rainfall by processing long term hourly data and investigating prediction models.
