Of the various methods used to achieve reliable communications in wireless links, spatial diversity is particularly attractive, as it does not require additional bandwidth or any reduction in transmission rate. Spatial diversity does, however, require the use of multiple antennas separated by a few wavelengths called antenna arrays in order to be effective. Smart antennas use spatial array signal processing techniques at the antenna array to improve the performance of the signal transmission and high resolution signal detection.
