Abstract: This dissertation gives an overview on Mobile IP. It also describes the inner life of GPRS, from which the UMTS standard is an evolution. An overview is given from UMTS and the differences between the GPRS and UMTS standards are pointed out. The study concentrates on Mobile IP in UMTS. How and why Mobile IP should be used in UMTS, and how Mobile IP should be changed to meet the requirements of commercial computing, are questions that this dissertation addresses. The conclusion of this dissertation is one answer based on one investigation if Mobile IP is feasible as the basis of cellular packet data system mobility management.
