Abstract: Perceptual Audio Coders incorporate human perceptual modeling techniques in order to reduce data rates, while maintaining high fidelity of the reconstructed audio signal. Auditory models form the backbone of such coders and auditory masking is the key phenomenon that is exploited to remove perceptual redundancy. But, most of the auditory models which are currently used in many medium to high rate audio coders estimate masking conservatively. At very low bit rates, more accurate auditory models are needed.
