Abstract: Today, the compression of audio signals is a common standard technology. Some of the techniques for high quality audio compression have been adopted as international standards. However, the problem with the already existing coders is the high bitrate with which they operate. Thus, our work emphasizes on the development of a low bitrate audio codec using the existing open source audio coding engines MP3 and spectral band replication. Work is concentrated on developing a decoder, which is more commonly used when compared to the encoder.
