Performance-enhanced microstrip line bandpass filters with size miniaturization

The work has been proposed to design various microstrip bandpass filters with miniaturized size, ultra-wide stopband or ultra-wide passband. The stepped impedance resonator (SIR) is used to control the positions of its higher order resonant frequencies by adjusting the impedance ratio. These SIR resonators are then applied to the design of bandpass filters with ultra-wide stopband or ultra-wideband (UWB) passband. The sidecoupled microstrip open-loop resonator (OLR) is also studied to remove spurious harmonics by utilizing the coupling-cancellation mechanism. The multi-stage cascaded microstrip bandpass filters constructed on the aperture-backed SIR and side-coupled OLR, dual-mode bandpass filters based on the meander-shaped stepped-impedance ring resonator (SIRR) and UWB bandpass filters on multiple-mode resonator (MMR) have been successfully designed in simulation and verified by experimental measurements. All the newly proposed techniques: aperture-backed SIR, SIRR, MMR, side-coupled OLR and strengthened coupling structures have been found very effective in the enhancement of the filter performance as well as the size miniaturization.
