Abstract

The film is an exploration on the social role of, and cultural history of Chickens in Singapore told through a young boyʼs (Xiao Cong) perspective. Xiao Cong sets off in an “Alice-in-wonderland” style cyclical journey, mimicking the life cycle of a chicken. Therefore the film structure references the question, “which came first the chicken or the egg?” The film seeks to provide basic understanding on Singaporeanʼs relationship to poultry farming and responsible consumption conjuring up post apocalyptic anxieties of food. The film also represents the culture of nostalgia as enacted through consumption of “historical foods” (Kaka, and Chickadee chicken snacks) and popular ditties.
