Abstract: The project studies and demonstrates flywheel energy storage (FES) technologies system. The studies of flywheel energy storage technologies involve the past and the current FES technologies. The project mainly focuses on the principle and theory for flywheel energy storage. In this project, a flywheel storage system is designed into a bicycle and a prototype is fabricated. The purpose of this application is to demonstrate flywheel energy storage concepts. The studies in this project aim to give an insight of how the flywheel energy storage evolves along the years, including the technologies and applications. In this project, functional analysis diagram, morphological chart and decision matrix table are used to illustrate how the final design is generated. The detailed design was produced, with computer-aided-design software. Then fabrication of the prototype was completed according to the detailed design. Finally, a flywheel energy storage system installed in bicycle was successfully accomplished. In this device, the major considerations are high durability and reliability, simplicity and cost effectiveness.
