Title: Incorporating wind generation into LV microgrid system

Abstract: Wind generation is gaining popularity as traditional sources of fuel are predicted to go below sustainable levels in the near future. Dating back to when wind was used for simple windmill and farming purposes, wind is gaining success as a clean and abundant alternative energy. So much so that it has evolved into large scale wind farms for energy harnessing. In this project, a wind turbine is installed on the rooftop of the S2 block of Nanyang Technological University (NTU). It uses a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator and transmits data through wireless means to LaCER, where the microgrid is installed. A control mechanism using Indirect Vector Control for connection of the wind turbine to the microgrid is proposed by the student. However, inconsistency of the wind provided little power generation resulted in the use of the Squirrel Cage Generator (SCIG) with a various speed drive to provide for the testing and simulation of the converter hardware that will be used for the Skystream. In this report, the theory behind wind power and power electronics for connection of the wind turbine is discussed. The proposed control strategy, hardware and results of the successful simulation of hardware are shown in the second half of the report.
