Abstract: As a part of the curriculum structure in Nanyang Technology University’s Electrical and Electronic Engineering course, students are required to take up a Final Year Project based on either their interest or their specialization field on a certain topic in the final year of their study. I have chosen Piezoelectric-based Clean Energy Generation for my Final Year Project as my interest lies in creating applications that can help to promote the “Green” technology. With technology advancing in such a fast pace today, many countries and corporate are looking for clean, sustainable and green energy supply. This can help in maximizing cost-saving and also create a reputable image for the government or corporate in social responsibility. Therefore, many research institutes would spend millions of dollars in the research and development of the clean energy. The green energy can come in the many different forms such as solar power, thermal energy, wind energy and kinetic energy. In Piezoelectric-based Clean Energy Generation, when a mechanical stress is exerted on a piezoelectric material, an electrical potential is created. This electrical potential is captured and stored for further use. With constant exertion of mechanical stress, best at a resonance frequency and strength, the energy generated can be used to supply power to many applications. This report will introduce the basic principle of piezoelectric technology, researching and brainstorming of piezoelectric-based applications, and selection of available piezoelectric-based generators, laboratory testing of the purchased generator and to the implementation of an application. The most important purpose of the report will be to share the experiences gained and lessons learnt throughout the project. This knowledge can be useful for others who are pursuing on in working with piezoelectric-based applications. Another take away in this report will be for others to work on some of the interesting ideals I have brainstormed.
