This thesis studies Singapore Zhicheng Hostel and its foreign student occupants. It finds that both Zhicheng and Singapore are capable of attracting foreign students in their own rights. While Singapore is attractive with its social diversity, Zhicheng provides software and hardware facilities that appeal to the parents of its predominantly ethnic Chinese occupants. The prolonged living and studying render both Singapore and Zhicheng into a temporary “home” for the students. The “home” is phasal and a transitional site for the students, between their hometown and destination of migration, and also between their parents’ home and the ideal home. It also finds that although the occupants make use of the homely facilities in the hostel, they do not get a complete sense of being at “home”.
