Abstract: Fluorescent lamps are low pressure discharge lamps and playing an important role in illumination system for a long time due to their higher efficiency and longer life span than that of incandescent lamps. In this project, the characteristics and working principles of the fluorescent lamps had been reviewed and their driving circuits were studied. Then the lamp was modeled based on a simplified set of physical equations which gave the validity over a wide range of operating frequencies. Its parameters were determined in terms of electrical voltage and current under AC operating at different frequencies. This simple and user-friendly lamp model predicted the lamp’s behaviour without requiring any data from lamp manufacturers. The model was simulated by simulation software such as Matlab Simulink and Power Simulation (PSIM).
