英语社群对南洋大学倡办的反应 ：以1953至1954年《海峡时报》读者来函为考察对象 = The responses of the English-speaking community to the proposed establishment of the Nanyang University (an analysis of The Straits Times forum letters 1953-1954)

Abstract

本论文研究20世纪50年代初,华人社会倡议创办南洋大学（简称南大）时，马来亚（包括新加坡）英语社群提出的反应。英语社群是指掌握英文英语的人士，他们用英文进行思考，以英语作为工作语言和沟通语言，包括华族、马来族、印族的人士，和英国殖民地政府官员。虽然当中大部分人只懂英语，但也有一些人是通晓其他语言的。This thesis studies the responses of the English-speaking community in Malaya (including Singapore) toward the proposed establishment of Nanyang University during the early 1950s. The English-speaking community refers to those who have a good command of the English language, not only using English to think, but also adopting it as a working and social language. The English-speaking community includes the British Colonial Government officials and people of the various races namely, the Chinese, Malays and Indians. A number of the English-speaking community members are proficient in English as well as in other languages.
