This research compares the portrayal of the leading female character appeared in Wang Anyi’s novel, The Everlasting Regret, with the movie version bearing the same title conducted by Stanley Kwan. My thesis will show how different gender and cultural background of the author/conductor has influenced and affected the portrayal of the main female character Wang Qiyao in the book and the movie. This research will also examine the influence of the city setting of Shanghai has moulded Wang Qiyao into a shrewd Shanghai femme fatale. I will also discuss how the female body of Wang Qiyao has been transformed and reconstructed by the masculine social hegemony in the movie.
