Title: Network resource management to transport pre-stored video across broadband networks

Issue Date: 2000
Abstract: MPEG variable bit rate (VBR) encoded video is known to exhibit long-range dependent behavior and significant multiple-time-scale rate variability but with consistent image quality. The traffic characteristics of such video have raised new issues and have also posed new challenges for the design, implementation and management in the broadband networks. This thesis focuses primarily on the problems of bandwidth allocation and buffer dimensioning to transport pre-stored MPEG video data across networks and its impacts on video traffic characterization and network resource management, which are two important issues to support multimedia network applications, such as video-on-demand (VoD), digital library, tele-education and tele-shopping.
