Abstract: This dissertation describes the design and implementation of a system to enable television-broadcasting companies to send background information along with each television programme. This information could be cooking recipes, nature documentary background text, "pick of the Internet" and other similar material. It would flow straight into a consumer's user application running on a home personal computer for instant use or storage. A hardware unit able to interface between a NICAM television receiver and a communication port on an IBM-compatible personal computer is described. The unit retrieves information carried upon normally unused data bits within NICAM encoded sound transmissions.
