Issue Date: | 2011 | Abstract: | Gender. Male, Female. Masculinity and femininity exist at once in both sexes. There is not one individual in this very world that is entirely feminine or masculine. Gender is malleable. Our societies have constructed a rigid and unrealistic depiction of how things really are. It has shaped our minds drastically, allowing us to believe in things that are not necessarily "true". Versions of truth are shaped within many different forms of context. These variations are controlled by dominant powers within the society. The transgender and transsexual communities in Singapore have long been stifled by the conservative mindsets of countless Singaporeans. Considered as a taboo subject, both communities in Singapore face all forms of discrimination and ridicule. Transphoria celebrates the lives of these individuals, presenting a peek into their personal spaces and expressing a sense of gender euphoria. Across a year of photographing, not only a better understanding of the community was attained but new friendships were forged in hopes of eradicating transphobia. The project encourages a sense of acceptance and awareness for this amazing community in our very society. | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/10356/44711 | Schools: | School of Art, Design and Media | Rights: | Nanyang Technological University | Fulltext Permission: | restricted | Fulltext Availability: | With Fulltext |
