Abstract: This report presents the research results obtained by the author in his Final Year Project No. W1148-102: Incorporation of large-scale pumped storage hydro with renewable energy sources. It is well-known that large-scale pumped storage hydro can store surplus electrical power and release the stored energy when necessary through salient-pole synchronous generator. The working condition of the pumped storage hydro is based on the system requirements. In this report, instead of conventional generation, wind farm has been selected as the source of renewable energy. Firstly, a literature review containing basic knowledge on synchronous machine in generator/motor operation, generator control system, wind power generation, power quality and system stability is elaborated first. The equivalent circuit model of the wind-turbine-pumped storage hydro system is then shown in the following chapter. Based on this model, operating condition of the power system is derived in relation to the output power of the wind turbine.
