Abstract: This report will examine the authentication of identity in the context of the Internet as well as the various computer based applications. By taking a look at the history of online authentication, the various measures to enhance security and the different types of authentication available today, this report will seek to understand and improve on these techniques. The main focus of the report will be on the biometric techniques for authentication. This includes fingerprint, speech, eye, facial and other types of techniques for identifying a person through his or her biometric traits. Finally, this report will then focus on a single biometric trait, which is facial recognition and run through the basic algorithm for achieving this method of identification.
