Abstract: This study validates the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a non invasive technique to determine microstructure of the trabecular bone. Comparison was done between the bone strength for wet and dry bones as limited studies have been done in this area. While porcine femurs were scanned using Tesla MR Scanner with spatial resolution of 0.24 x 0.24 x1 mm using fast spin echo proton density sequence and using computed tomography (CT). Histomorphometric parameters were derived by image processing techniques from MR images to study the micro-architecture of trabecular bone. A total of 18 specimens (6.5 x 13 mm cylindrical shape) from the distal femur were cored using a diamond coring tool and subjected to mechanical compression tests at a strain rate of 0.04/s. The results derived from the MRI were correlated with that from computed tomography (CT), bone mineral density (BMD) from dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).
