“Ci Mulan Dai Fu Cong Jun” (hereinafter referred to as "Ci Mulan") is a famous Ming Dynasty play created by Xu Wei based on “Ballad of Mulan”. Together with his other three plays: “Kuang Gu Shi Yu Yang San Nong” , “Yu Chan Shi Cui Xiang Yi Meng” and “Nv Zhuang Yuan Ci Huang De Feng”, they are referred to as the “ Si Sheng Yuan”. In terms of the artistic form and literary arrangements, the play has added many new elements and contents, using minute descriptions to portray the typical literary image of Mulan. I will start by giving an overview of the works, which includes the biography of the playwright, the content of the story as well as the prototype of the play: “Ballad of Mulan”. This thesis will investigate in detail about the added content plots in "Ci Mulan", as compared to "Ballad of Mulan ", in the adaptation process of the literary image of Mulan. I will discuss the details of the adaptation, and the cause and effect of it in combination with the background of the playwright and the historical era. Lastly, I will anaylse in depth about the male disguise of Mulan, which is an important factor towards the creation of its character, and reflect upon its significance and the tragedy behind this.
