Title: | Industrial attachment report with Institute of Microelectronics (IME) | Authors: | Liu, Bing. | Keywords: | DRNTU::Engineering::Electrical and electronic engineering | Issue Date: | 2009 | Abstract: | Polarization diversity scheme offers a good solution to polarization independent photonic circuit. Polarization rotator and splitter are critical component in such polarization diversity circuit. In this report, mode-evolution-based and mode-coupling-based polarization rotator and splitter are widely studied. Various polarization rotator structures are investigated theoretically and experimentally. Simulation and experimental testing results show that mode-evolution-based polarization rotators have advantages in tolerance of fabrication error. On the other hand, mode-coupling-based polarization rotators have advantages in shorter rotation length, which is essential for high integration. Asymmetric sidewall rotator with tapered extension is designed taking advantages of both structures and shows good simulation results. Moreover, a slanted-angle polarization rotator is designed innovatively with high extinction ratio and shorter rotation length. Polarization diversity circuit implemented with polarization rotator and splitter has been designed up to four channels. Conclusion is made on the performance of various rotator structures. Recommendations are made for future polarization diversity scheme investigation. | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/10356/46515 | Schools: | School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering | Organisations: | A*STAR Institute of Microelectronics | Rights: | Nanyang Technological University | Fulltext Permission: | restricted | Fulltext Availability: | With Fulltext |
