Abstract: A test rig and a strain-gauge balance for studying the transient loading on an airfoil with a detached spoiler have been developed for wind-tunnel testing. The test rig consists of aNACA 0012 airfoil, an actuating system for spoiler, a structure supporting the airfoil and an indexing table. Since the airfoil is mounted vertically in a low-speed wind tunnel, it is supported by a 3-component strain-gauge balance external to it. A set of data acquisition system is connected to the force balance for the measurement of the transient loads on the wing. Dynamic measurements have been carried out to show that by detaching the spoiler from the airfoil, the adverse lift and moment induced by a rapidly deployed spoiler can be reduced.
