Abstract: Flywheel energy storage system is a promising approach for enhancement in the stabilization of power systems. Development of the energy product of permanent magnet materials in the twentieth century and the reduction in price give support for their application in Axial-Flux Permanent Magnet (AFPM) machines in industry. The recent research shows that by controlling the armature currents in two stators, the strong axial magnetic attractive force between the stator and rotor of an AFPM machine with two stators and one rotor will be minimized. Therefore, AFPM machine with light rotor supported by passive magnetic bearings is a realizable and reasonable structure for flywheel energy storage.
