dc.description.abstractWireless sensor network (WSN) has been actively researched in recent years because of its wide range of applications such as natural habitat monitoring, healthcare, home automation, traffic management and military applications. In many cases, the sensed data is not useful without knowing the sensor nodes' locations. Localization algorithms can be categorized as range-free and range-based. In this research, the radio frequency (RF) based approach is used. In conventional RF-based approaches, the path loss parameters in the received signal strength (RSS) - distance model are often determined based on extensive measurements conducted offline. Because the RSS measurements fluctuate with the environment, the use of fixed path loss parameters would reduce the localization accuracy. The purpose of this research is to develop a RF-based localization algorithm where the path loss parameters and the unknown locations are determined simultaneously in real time.en_US
