Abstract: With the fast progress in computer and communications, home automation would soon be an everyday reality. Most approaches to home automation require special electrical wiring of appliances to a relay unit. The alternative is a direct substitution of the 3-pin plug by a remote control. However, almost all homes are wired such that singleline switching controls the home appliances. As homes are built to last and re-wiring is expensive, a remotely controllable switch that can retrofit-replace the single-line switch is very much needed to facilitate the introduction of home automation. This development of this remote switch is reported in this thesis.
