dc.description.abstractThe hukou system is the institution that imposes limits on the movement of population in China. This system determines where one belongs and results in disparity among people with different types of hukou. This dissertation examines the influence of hukou system, focusing on the talent group in the Beijing area. A survey was conducted on 100 non-Beijinger graduates who are currently working in Beijing, finding out their experiences and evaluation of their lives and Beijing hukou. The results of the survey and some interviews indicate that education of next generation is the most important concern among all the other major benefits that Beijing hukou entails. The acquisition of Beijing hukou is also a significant factor determining the choice of career, partner for marriage. In addition, further modifications of the hukou system in Beijing are suggested for the benefit of the migration of talents.en_US
