Abstract: Internal oxygen transport is important in the development of tissue construct in vitro. A new bioreactor culture system and a mathematical model were established to investigate oxygen transport in relation to cell distribution of esophageal smooth muscle tissue construct cultured under medium flow. The bioreactor system was designed to enable in-situ oxygen profiling in the flow bioreactors to capture real-time spatial oxygen data in the growing construct; the mathematical model assuming oxygen-dependent growth kinetics was formulated using Volume Averaging Method (VAM) for the transport phenomena in the multiphasic tissue construct.
