Abstract: Today's markets are characterized by differences, not similarity. The task facing manufacturing is how to cope with the marked level of differences that typically exists in a firm's market. With the widespread reach of the Internet, customers now know more about their options than before. While this is a good development in terms of better product options / development and availability, this customer empowerment translates into challenges (more work, more cost, less profit) for the manufacturer. Today's manufacturer needs to be agile, responsive, innovative, economical and appealing, factors which individually are the strengths of yesteryear successful manufacturers.
