Abstract: On investigating new methods towards the synthesis of azaheterocycles from organic azides, a novel orthogonal route leading to the formation of isoindole and isoquinoline derivatives was discovered and developed. a-Azido carbonyl compounds bearing a 2-alkenylaryl moiety at the cc-position were precursors to the synthesis of these useful azaheterocycles via 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition and 671-electrocyclization respectively.
