Abstract: The media is said to play a crucial role in the forming of gender identities. It has often been criticised for its role in maintaining traditional sexist attitudes towards women and for negatively impacting women's self-perception and self-image. The visual stereotyping of women in the media has especially earned much criticism for its role in the objectification of women's bodies.
