Title: Towards a polycentric cinema : freeing trans films from transphobia.
Authors: Chen, Shanghao.
Keywords: DRNTU::Humanities
Issue Date: 2012
Abstract: Cinema has often been praised for its ability to represent a myriad of gender subjectivities, and in turn, questioning the hegemonic social order affecting gender and sexuality. However, transgender films, specifically from Europe and America, are often productions of heterosexual transphobia, and has done little to challenge heteronormativity. This paper explores transgender films of Euro-American and Asian origin, and argues for a more diverse reception of transgender films in order to capture the diversity and plurality of the transgender subjectivity.
