Issue Date: 2012
Abstract: The aspect ratio of a video is defined as the ratio between the width and the height of a frame of the video. Prior to the establishment of the standard widescreen format 16:9 in 2008, a lot of video material exists which is in the 4:3 aspect ratio format. Existing solutions to retarget 4:3 video content to be displayed on 16:9 display panels induce distortion in the original video data or may even cause loss of data. By using algorithms to determine the energy represented in a frame of a video, it is possible to identify seams in a video where data can be interpolated. This allows content aware re-targeting of video content with less distortion of the main subjects than existing implementations. The purpose of this project is to develop a seam carving based content aware video re-targeting algorithm to allow video content in non-standard widescreen formats to be re-targeted intelligently for modern day displays and their analysis.
