Abstract: In an earlier investigation [3], battery charging strategy under floating-charge had shown to have an effect on the performance and lifetime of lead-acid battery. The present project is aimed to discover and understand the effects of different charging methods on the performance and lifetime of lead-acid battery. An approach to determine the relationship between different types of charger has on the performance and lifetime of the battery is described. Two brand new lead-acid batteries are charged by the two types of chargers. The approach will obtain the charging and discharging profiles of the batteries through three laboratory tests. From the results of the laboratory test, effects of different types of charger on the batteries had been observed. A method to compute the service life of the batteries is illustrated. With the proposed method and sufficient data on hand, the impact of different types of charger on the lifetime of lead-acid battery has been validated.
