Title: | A study of characteristics and applications of ionic liquids | Authors: | Etlana Yusari Dhaniardi | Keywords: | DRNTU::Science::Chemistry::Physical chemistry::Theory of solution | Issue Date: | 2012 | Abstract: | This study explores a method to measure Hildebrand solubility parameter (δH) of ionic liquids which is one of the characteristics of ionic liquids. δH can be used to determine properties of ionic liquids as δH is a good indicator of solubility due to estimation of the degree of interaction between materials it provides. Materials with comparable values of δH are expected to be miscible of each other. The results from this present study show that δH of ionic liquids can be determined by measuring their intrinsic viscosities in a series of solvents with known solubility parameters. δH of ionic liquids is obtained as the value of δH when the intrinsic viscosity reaches maximum point. This present study determines δH of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate by intrinsic viscosity method. In this study, an application of ionic liquids is investigated as well. Ionic liquids can be incorporated in microemulsion to replace water phase, oil phase, or surfactant for pharmaceutical applications. A novel ionic liquid-assisted microemulsion, i.e. ionic liquid-in-oil microemulsion is reported in this study. This present study provides the evidence that ionic liquid can be incorporated in microemulsion through a series of screening procedures. The formulation acquired in this study is a microemulsion system which consists of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide and isopropyl myristate, stabilized by Tween 80. To see the potential of this microemulsion, this present study investigates the solubility of ciprofloxacin in this microemulsion. | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/10356/50008 | Schools: | School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering | Rights: | Nanyang Technological University | Fulltext Permission: | restricted | Fulltext Availability: | With Fulltext |
