Abstract: The exponential growth of smartphones and smart devices such as iPhones and iPads, has led to increase in mobile data traffic. This growth affects both the capacity requirements of the mobile networks as well as the quality of service (QoS). High percentage of mobile data traffic is generated indoors and long term evolution (LTE) or fourth generation (4G) operating at higher frequencies cannot really meet the ever-increasing demand of data traffic with reasonable QoS. This final year project provides an analysis of femtocell networks to improve indoor communication. In this regard, a system level simulation environment was developed that included technical analysis of throughput of the two-tier network as well as outage probability. Research has shown that with increasing percentage of indoor traffic, the aggregated throughput of the macro network decreases significantly. Simulation results show the increase in macrocell throughput by off-loading this traffic to femtocell network. However, the introduction of femtocell in macrocell network poses a possible issue of interference which has to be addressed. The power control method is analysed in this project as a viable option for mitigating interference related problems.
