Abstract: This is a paper on the constituition of selfhood among African-American women, with reference to Alice Walker's The Colour Purple and Harriet Jacobs's Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. These women overcame all adversities and established their identities via their communities, families, and the search of their rights to speech and expression of selves.
