Abstract: This thesis, consisting of three chapters, describes the application of the orthometalated [1-(dimethylamino)ethyl]naphthalene palladium(II) complex and its platinum analogue used as the chiral template to promote a range of asymmetric cycloaddition reactions and hydrophosphination reaction. This methodology provides the access to chiral P-S, P-As, P-N, and P-P bidentate ligands. For the asymmetric cycloaddition reactions, the metal effect is discussed. The chiral palladium template and platinum template showed different effect on selectivity of these reactions. In addition, the reactivity and selectivity of exo- and endo- pathways cycloaddition are also investigated.
