If you like it, then put a ring on it : a study of the stigmatization of singles in Singapore.

Abstract

It is a known fact that the number of singles in Singapore have been on the rise in the recent years. The state is a pro-marriage one and has always encouraged singles to set aside their individual needs and to settle down and start a family. There have been many studies on singles around the world, but only a few actually address the issue of singlehood in Singapore. Moreover, with the increase in the standard of living, singlehood rates have drastically increased and the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has fallen below replacement level. In my research, I would like to highlight how singles in Singapore are stigmatized and how their choice to be single should not be seen as being selfish.
