Abstract: In this report, the dynamic behavior of a single stage spur gear transmission is studied. Time varying stiffness is an internal excitation which is hard to control due to the changing combined torsional stiffness. The reason for the change of the combined torsional stiffness is due to the type of contact in the line of action. Dynamic response was studied to see the effect the time varying stiffness. First, the combined torsional combined was found using ANSYS through Finite Element method (FEM). The equations of motion were derived for the single stage spur gear transmission. Then the dynamic response was computed using Simulink in MATLAB. The time varying component was removed to study the effect it has on the time and frequency domain. Dynamic responses come to confirm that time varying stiffness has a significant influence on acceleration as shown through finding of mesh force. The oscillations shown in the displacement in the line of action clearly shown that time varying stiffness plays a part in the vibration found in the spur gear box.
