dc.description.abstract | ‘Makan’ is a colloquial term used in Singapore to express an invitation to a meal. In its native Malay language, it translates to ‘the act of eating’. The Makan People presents a contemporary visual and tactile interpretation of Singapore’s culinary practices and dining habits through the years. In this series of crockery pieces, three families of legged crockery items were derived from the observation and exploration of various local culinary practices translated into elements hinted in the design of the seemingly familiar objects. The Makan People was designed to trigger nostalgia and create significant memories in the use of the crockery pieces. It is a series that entails the relationships people share with Singapore’s unique culinary culture rich in both tradition and fusion. The Makan People seems almost alive. | en_US |
