Abstract: There have been three symbolic developments of payment: notes and coins, then paper payments like cheques and finally electronic payments. Plastic cards, virtually unknown in Singapore in the early days, have proliferated so successfully that there are now over three millions of them -- ATM/NETS, Credit and charge cards in circulation.
