Abstract: Experiments on hanging water and ethanol droplet evaporation on a thermocouple with and without laser excitation demonstrate that the surface tension affects the rate of evaporation and the temperature increase. In the absence of laser excitation, water and ethanol droplets are subjected to evaporation under various room temperatures. The results obtained conclude that the increase in room temperature will bring about an increase in evaporation rate. The droplets were then subjected to laser excitation at different power rating at 1Hz, 3Hz and 5Hz. With the present of laser excitation, the surface tension effect is increased, causing a significant increase in evaporation rate and temperature increase. Hence, the effect of surface tension is analyzed to be proportional to the rate of evaporation and temperature increase. In conclusion, the project was successful in obtaining a set of data useful to determine the general trend of the effect of surface tension on the organic droplet. However, the author felt that the project can be further improved on in future research due to other concerning factor that might contribute to the effect of droplet evaporation.. Possible recommended research would be the investigating of humidity effects on evaporation droplet.
