dc.description.abstractOver the past decades, Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) has been widely applied in many areas including flight dynamics, entertainment, health care etc. Generally there are three sensors built in the unit i.e. accelerometer, which measures the linear acceleration including the gravity of the object; magnetometer, which detects the magnetic field in the vicinity, and gyroscope, which tells the angular velocity when the object rotates. Furthermore, with sensor fusion technology which merges all the raw data, more valuable information is available such as the spatial orientation and linear acceleration. In this project, a smart dumbbell is developed by mounting the circuit inside the handle of a normal dumbbell. With the spatial orientation and acceleration of the dumbbell available, much functionality is achieved. For example the system is able to count the number of reps that has been done and detect incorrect postures. In the GUI, animation and sound effects will give the user informative feedbacks on their postures. Furthermore, all the data will be recorded as personal profile and a schedule can guide the user with effective exercises. All from scratch, my collaborator Li Shiwei and I built the whole system from both software and hardware aspects. I mainly focused on the software aspect which included posture modelling, algorithm application and circuit soldering, while my partner worked more on hardware aspects such as components communication, circuit design and GUI design. The cooperation and collaboration between us have led to a great achievement.en_US
