Authors: Zou, Yuxing.
Keywords: DRNTU::Engineering
Issue Date: 2013
Abstract: This project is aimed to observe and analysis the joint behaviour of Circular Hollow Section (CHS) Y-Joint under elevated temperatures by using Finite Element (FE) Software, Abaqus 6.11 to analyse the ultimate strength of Y-joints . The objective of this study is divided into two sectors which are CHS Y-Joint subjected to Axial Compression and In-plane Bending. While, only axial compression is discussed in this project . The analysis of behaviour of the Y-joint under axial loading consists four stages. Firstly, parameters of Y-joint which would affect the ultimate strength would be studied and fitted dimensions shall be chose for the modelling. In second stage, FE modelling is conducted to observe the behaviour of joints in different temperatures. Moreover, the failure mechanism of Y-joint shall be discussed. In third stage, the effects of Beta (d/D) value to the strength of joint are analysed by simulating various Beta models under different temperatures. Lastly, a comparison between CHS Y-Joints and T-Joints has been conducted associated with Eurocode 3, Part 1-8: Design of Joints.
