Abstract: Product designers used to think that improve functional performance and quality of the product is the most effective way to enhance customer satisfaction. While nowadays product functionality is more and more alike, affect and emotion come to play a crucial role in customer evaluation. Especially for everyday things like a lamp, it has to satisfy both functional and emotional needs of the customer in order to be welcomed by today’s fast changing complex market. In this project, the author designed a lamp with an emotional design approach. The development process starts from conducting market research to concept generation and selection. Later a prototype is built to realize the design concept and test for user experience. Consumer’s preferences and needs have been complex and ever changing, so large amount of survey has been conducted and multiple design tools/methods had been used in this project.
