Title: Simulation study on aircraft parking in a given storage design configuration

Abstract: The strain on parking space in Seletar Airport had led to an innovative design of a system of mechanised compact parking that can provide storage space for up to a total of 95 aircraft in a land area 30% smaller than the traditional method of compact parking. An unconventional design of 18 circular rotating discs in 6 three-storey buildings connected by two turn-lifts, this system has not been studied before. In this project, the operational stability and efficiency of this system is studied by first isolating a carousel as a queue model. This model is developed in stages of 2 carousels, 4 carousels, 6 carousels, 12 carousels (Phase I) and finally the full 18-caruosel system (Phase II). Each queue model is programmed using MATLAB with due consideration on the use of waiting time to mitigate operational conflict, also on carousel selection and path selection to the carousel selected. The final programmes for Phases I and II are run under various conditions of aircraft mean arrival times and mean storage times. It is found that the facility can indeed function in stable conditions with a system utilization of up to 86.7% and mean dynamic waiting times of as low as half a minute in Phase II.
