dc.description.abstractThe Extraordinary Optical Transmission (EOT) phenomenon, as has been reported by Ebbensen [1], describes the light transmission enhancement through an opaque metal film on condition that the film is regularly patterned with repeating structures, such as two-dimensional (2-D) holes array matrix. The EOT phenomenon is believed to be related to surface plasma on the metal surface. New technologies may be developed based on this phenomenon, which may lead to new types of optical devices. Carbon nanotube (CNT) is a one-dimensional (1-D) material: it has a diameter on the nanometer scale while its length can be several centimeters. It can be obtained by rolling up a single graphite layer (often called graphene). The properties of CNT partially rely on the rolling direction of graphene, which makes CNT quite flexible. In electronic area, CNT is a promising candidate of interconnecting material due to its high current-density capacity. It has special optical properties owing to its unique band structure. In this project, EOT of Terahertz (1 THz=1012 Hz) radiation is the main topic. Nowadays THz represents an attractive research field as a consequence of its potential applications in areas such as medical and scientific imaging [2]. Experiments will be designed to show how the incorporation of CNTs on the patterned thin gold (Au) film will influence the transmittance of THz Electromagnetic (EM) wave.en_US
